We enjoy an exciting culture of reading in Cedars School. Whatever a pupils ability and preference, we have books to suit all.
Accredited Reading School
We are currently seeking a Reading School accreditation from The Scottish Book Trust to recognise how much we love reading at Cedars and all our endeavours to promote reading for pleasure for every student. Students love the cosy and inviting Reading Room located in the library section of the English classroom.
The Reading Challenge
Monthly reading challenges for P7 - S6 encourage students to broaden their reading horizons, and provide opportunities to respond creatively to a text, build their vocabulary, review books for their class and @cedarsreaders on Instagram, and win house points. A day out in Glasgow to choose new books for the school library is the much coveted prize for the students with the most house points.
Community links
As a school we have forged close links with local independent bookshop owner, Aileen Jeffrey, who runs The Ginger Cat Children's Book Shop in Kilmacolm. Classes have visited the shop to choose books to restock their class libraries and Aileen ran a pop-up shop in the school during a community evening. Senior students have written 'shelf-talkers' to promote the teen fiction available in the shop. We were also delighted to host the author, Ross McKenzie, who Aileen brought along to talk to Middle School about his latest book and to run a writing workshop.
All our staff promote reading for pleasure and display posters where they share what they are currently reading, what they are hoping to read next and a book they would recommend.
